If it's in a Raintree and Company product, you can find it here. Below is our alphabetical, plain-language guide to the ingredients we use, what each one is, why we chose it, and how it fits into our commitment to plant-derived, eco-friendly formulas wherever possible. We're building this list one ingredient at a time, so check back as it grows.
Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside
A mild, plant-derived cleansing agent made by combining coconut-derived fatty alcohols with glucose (plant sugar). It's a non-ionic surfactant, meaning it helps water and oil mix so grease and residue rinse away cleanly, without the harshness of traditional detergents.
We use it because it's readily biodegradable, gentle enough for sensitive skin, and helps create a soft, stable lather. It's a small supporting player in our formulas, working alongside our other plant-based surfactants to boost cleaning power naturally.
Citric Acid
A naturally occurring acid found in citrus fruits, though most commercial citric acid (including ours) is produced by fermenting plant sugars like corn or molasses, a process similar to how vinegar is made. It's a staple in food, skincare, and cleaning products alike.
We use it in small amounts to fine-tune the pH of our formulas, keeping them balanced, gentle, and stable. It's fully biodegradable, plant-based, and one of the most well-studied, widely used ingredients in the natural products world, a simple, trusted way to round out a formula without synthetic pH adjusters.
Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB)
A gentle, coconut oil-derived surfactant that's amphoteric, meaning it can act as both a mild cleanser and a foam booster. It's one of the most widely used plant-based surfactants in personal care and cleaning products, prized for the rich, stable lather it creates without needing harsher synthetic foaming agents.
We use it to boost and stabilize the suds in our products, working alongside our other plant-derived cleansers. It's biodegradable and derived from a renewable coconut source rather than petroleum.
Coconut Apricot Soy Wax Blend
A blend of coconut, apricot, and soybean waxes, all plant-derived, renewable materials. This stands in contrast to traditional paraffin wax, which is a petroleum byproduct.
We chose this blend for our products because it burns cleanly (soy and coconut wax are known for a cleaner burn with less soot than paraffin), holds fragrance well, and comes from renewable crop sources rather than fossil fuels. It's also biodegradable and free of the petroleum-derived additives found in many mass-market candle and wax melt products.
Decyl Glucoside
A mild, plant-derived cleanser made from corn or coconut-derived sugars combined with plant-based fatty alcohols. It's one of the gentlest surfactants available, which is why it's often used in products formulated for sensitive skin and baby care.
It's a workhorse ingredient across several Raintree and Company products because it cleans effectively while being readily biodegradable and non-irritating. It's a cornerstone of what lets us move away from harsher, petroleum-derived surfactants without sacrificing how well a product actually cleans.
Ethanol
A high-proof alcohol used as a solvent and quick-evaporating cleaning agent. Ours is corn-based, meaning it's fermented and distilled from a renewable plant crop rather than derived from petroleum. We specifically chose ethanol over cheaper alternatives like isopropyl alcohol or denatured alcohol, which tend to carry a much stronger, harsher odor.
In our products, it helps dissolve grease and grime and leaves a streak-free, fast-drying finish. Ethanol is also well known for its natural antimicrobial properties, it's the same type of alcohol used in hand sanitizers, which speaks to its versatility as an ingredient across both cleaning and personal care products.
Euxyl K900
Unlike most of the other ingredients on this list, Euxyl K900 isn't plant-derived, it's a preservative blend (benzyl alcohol and ethylhexylglycerin, stabilized with tocopherol/vitamin E) that's become a go-to choice in the natural and clean beauty space specifically because it's paraben-free and formaldehyde-free, unlike many traditional preservative systems.
Every water-based product needs a preservative to stay safe and stable, without one, products can grow mold, bacteria, or yeast within days. We chose Euxyl K900 because it's broad-spectrum (effective against a wide range of microbes), gentle, and widely recognized as one of the safer, more transparent preservative options available, letting us keep the rest of the formula clean without leaving the product unprotected.
Lauramine Oxide
A gentle, low-foaming surfactant made from a plant-derived fatty amine — in our case, sourced from palm oil. It belongs to a class of surfactants called amine oxides, known for boosting and stabilizing foam without adding harshness to a formula.
We use it as a foam booster in select formulas, working alongside our other plant-based surfactants to build the kind of rich, longer-lasting suds people expect — without reaching for cheaper synthetic foam boosters common in the industry.
Polysorbate 20
An emulsifier derived from sorbitol (a sugar alcohol found in fruits) combined with fatty acids and ethylene oxide. It's what allows oil-based fragrance to blend evenly into a water-based formula instead of separating or floating on top.
In our products, it works alongside decyl glucoside to keep the fragrance oil fully and evenly dispersed, so every use delivers the same clean scent without residue or streaking. It's widely used, well-studied, and generally regarded as safe in the concentrations used in cosmetic and cleaning formulas.
Sodium Bicarbonate
Better known as baking soda, a naturally occurring mineral compound that's been used for cleaning and deodorizing for over a century. Ours is aluminum-free.
It works by neutralizing odor molecules rather than masking them, which is why it's the base of select formulas. Combined with our fragrance oil, it lifts embedded odors while leaving a light, clean scent behind. It's non-toxic, and about as simple and well-understood an ingredient as they come.
Vegetable Glycerin
A clear, odorless liquid derived from plant oils (typically coconut, palm, or soy).
We use it in our products as a humectant, meaning it draws moisture to the skin, helping counteract the drying effect that soap and surfactants can have on their own. It's biodegradable, gentle, and one of the most well-established skin-conditioning ingredients in personal care, used in everything from lotions to soaps for exactly this reason.
Xanthan Gum
A natural thickener made through a fermentation process using a plant-based sugar (commonly corn, soy, or wheat), giving it a smooth, gel-like consistency without any synthetic thickening agents.
We use it to help stabilize and thicken select formulas, giving them a pleasant texture and consistent pour. In select formulas, it also works alongside our surfactants to thicken the lather and help the suds last longer.
